Bob Flavin: Take a spin in a Skoda Superb to see what you’re missing

Dragon scale yellow wasn’t a colour that I ever thought about until Skoda brought out a 280bhp Superb and let me drive it around Portlaoise.

There’s no hiding in it – neither is there any way that I could park in Lyster Square without having to answer many questions about the car.

It’s not a colour that will suit everyone especially those of you who like blending in but if you enjoy being the fastest saloon car on the road then, just remember, it comes in other colours.

If you just view this car as a standard Superb you’ll soon see that Skoda make the best saloon on the market at the moment.

There’s nothing else in the price bracket that competes with the clever features that you’ll find when you start driving one.

Every Skoda owner I’ve met has a story with their car and all those stories are good ones. From the umbrellas in the door to the huge boot, there really isn’t all that much to dislike about the Superb.

It’s something special when you put a 280bhp petrol unit under the bonnet and couple that to a DSG automatic gearbox that can change gears quicker than you can think as the auto box pre-selects the gear it thinks you need before you need it.

This means the DSG version of the car can get to 100kph in about 5.8 seconds and it’ll go on to a top speed of 250kph which is electronically limited to stop there.

All this and you can fit five adults, all their luggage and perhaps a bicycle or two on the roof.

The standard Superb starts at €27,700 but my test car is much closer to forty-eight grand.

That might seem a lot for a Skoda but in reality, I have most of the equipment that would otherwise be optional in the competition as standard in the Superb.

Still, It’s a shame that to get a tow-bar fitted from Skoda is a €902 option as it’s integrated into the braking system and you can put it away, still it’s a pricey piece of kit for a little run down the recycling bank.

The interior is still a standard Skoda with a few tweaks with the seats being a little more supportive and some fine materials dotted around.

As you’d expect there’s plenty of space in the cabin, the rear passengers can stretch out for the long journeys.

There’s plenty in the way of connectivity with USB and Apple-Android-Mirrorlink all being catered for, you can also spec a TV tuner which can stream analogue or digital stations.

Skoda as a brand has gotten better over the years and they show no signs of slowing down, the real question is whether you want a fast Superb, Kodiaq or wait for the Karoq to come later this year.

I loved my time with the Superb sportline as it’s such a sleeper car so long as you don’t get it in that Dragon colour.

The Superb range is now available from Pat Keogh car sales in Ballybrittas and I honestly say you need to have a spin just to see what you’re missing.
