The dumping epidemic in Laois ‘is a disgrace’

Dumping in Laois has become an epidemic one Cllr has claimed
Illegal dumping

A County Councillor has told a Municipal district meting that there is a dumping epidemic in Laois and he labelled it a ‘disgrace’.

Brendan Phelan made the comments after Cllr Seamus McDonald put forward a motion calling on the council to erect ‘No Dumping’ signs in Rosenallis.

Cllr Phelan said: “We have a major problem in every one of our areas.

“The illegal dumping and dumping on the side of the road is a major problem. It’s a disgrace.

“In some of the most scenic areas in the county, people just pull up and dump black bags into it.

“We’ve had the problem over the years but at the moment it seems far greater than every before. Whether it is the cost of waste disposal now, I don’t know.

“But we have a major problem all over the county. It is an embarrassment for everyone.”

Cllr McDonald said: “This is a scenic area on the way up to the Slieve Blooms and it’s terrible to see.”

Martina Bracken, from the Council’s environment office, said: “Environment Section are currently sourcing appropriate “No Dumping” signage.

“This request will be considered when the new signage has been procured.”
