John Sugrue will begin his reign as Laois senior football manager with a home game against Limerick in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League and he will also face a trip to London in Round 6 of that competition.

The draft league fixtures were released to the counties last night and Laois have been given three home games in Division 4 of the football league and four away fixtures while the hurlers will have three home games and two away.

The hurlers have been handed a particularly tricky start to their Division 1B campaign as they will face Limerick away in Round 1 before welcoming All Ireland champions Galway to O’Moore Park in Round 2. They are then at home to Antrim and away to Offaly before finishing up at home to Dublin.

The footballers, relegated to the bottom division for the first time in 50 years, will begin at home to Limerick on Saturday, January 27, and are then away to Leitrim the following Sunday.

Home games against Waterford and Antrim are then either side of an away trip to Wicklow before they finish up away to London on Sunday, March 11, and then away to Carlow on Sunday, March 25.

Carlow will be looking to build on their impressive 2017 championship run which saw them beat Wexford, London and Leitrim and compete well against Dublin and Monaghan.

Because London played all of their games away in 2017 as their ground in Ruislip was being redeveloped they have all their games at home next season.

Laois supporters willing to make the trip to London could make an incredible sporting few days out of it. Arsenal v Watford and Chelsea v Crystal Palace are both scheduled to play in the FA Premier League on Saturday, March 10, while the Cheltenham festival gets underway on Tuesday, March 13.

Laois’s full National League fixture list for 2018 is as follows:
