Gardaí issue warning over increase in copper theft

Copper theft from two locations in Laois
Copper thefts are on the rise in Laois

The Crime Prevention Officer for Laois is calling on members of the public to be vigilant over copper thefts.

Graham Kavanagh says that Gardai and Eir have noticed an increase in the theft of copper.

He said: “This involves the removal of phone lines along roadsides which appear to be occurring during dark hours in rural areas.

“The criminals involved are targeting the small quantity of copper contained in this cabling.

We would urge people to report any sightings to Gardai please.”

The Crime Prevention officer also said that another noticable area of concern is the targeting of Copper cylinders and piping from vacant premises.

He said: “My advice would be to either ensure vacant properties are secured well if such items are to be left there or remove them if the property is to be left vacant for indefinite periods.

“Remove the pay off for the criminal.”
