Laois County Council have agreed that they will help look after a lake in Portlaoise.

The maintenance of a lake in Glendowns was raised at a recent Municipal District Meeting by Cllr Noel Tuohy.

In response, engineer Wes Wilkinson said: “The outlet of the lake will be monitored over the winter period and debris will be removed as required.

“The lake in Glendowns is a habitat for a variety of wildlife. The Portlaoise MD Office has requested an ecologist report in relation to this location.

“It is intended that the report will provide guidance in relation to the types of works that can be carried out in this area.”

Cllr Tuohy welcomed the news. He said: “It is a lovely little estate and this adds to it.

“There was an otter there this week and a kingfisher. There’s ducks and it’s just something we don’t see around here too often.

“So it is something we should help maintain. People come up from the town with their kids to see the wildlife and it is lovely.”
