Laois outreach for Carlow IT proposed

Laois is the only county under Carlow IT’s remit which doesn’t have a formal third level outreach centre, according to one of its board members.

Cllr Jerry Lodge had a motion before this week’s meeting of Laois County Council requesting the council to enter into discussions with Carlow IT “with a view to establishing a formal third level outreach centre in county Laois along with Laois/Offaly ETB”.

Outreach centres for Carlow IT currently operate in Wicklow, Kilkenny and Wexford, Cllr Lodge said.

“Laois is the only county which Carlow IT has a remit for and doesn’t have an outreach centre,” he said.

“It is a situation I would like Laois County Council to actively engage on linking up with Carlow IT,” he said.

He noted that a Laois Third Level service runs in Portarlington, from which students graduate each year.

Cllr Lodge said he is currently a board member of the college, and would make efforts to move the issue on.

Opportune

“This is an opportune time,” he said for the council and the ETB to set up the outreach service.

“I will do my best to look after it at the board of Carlow IT,” he said.
