Garda car damaged following New Year’s Day arrest

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run

A Garda car was damaged after Gardaí made an arrest on New Year’s Day.

The incident occurred in Portlaoise in the early hours of New Year’s day.

It happened when two people were being driven to the garda station.

Both were arrested for public order offences in the town and were en route to the station when the damage happened.

A garda spokesman said that ‘matters are in hand and will be before the courts’ following the incident.

He added that the New Year celebrations were generally peaceful with only a couple of incidents.

He said: “There were a few public order arrests but that’s the norm for New Year’s Eve.

“Overall it was quiet enough throughout the Laois-Offaly division.”
