Six new faces in Laois football team for league opener

Laois football manager John Sugrue has named his side for the opening round of this year’s Allianz Football League, which begins with a home game against Limerick on Saturday.

And he has included six players to make their first start – Portlaoise duo David Holland and Brian Glynn, O’Dempsey’s Shane Nerney, Rosenallis’s Ruadhri Fennell, Emo’s Finbarr Crowley and Aaron Dowling from The Rock.

Indeed the entire full-back line of Holland, Nerney and Fennell are in line for their league debut in front of goalkeeper Graham Brody while Crowley’s inclusion at wing-back means that four of the six defenders are making their first start.

Captain Stephen Attride is named at centre-back and Trevor Collins, who made his debut last year, is on the other wing.

Danny O’Reilly is included in midfield alongside the long-serving John O’Loughlin, while Brian Glynn is at wing-forward and Aaron Dowling is in the corner. Paul Kingston, Gary Walsh, Alan Farrell and Eoin Lowry – who scored 1-6 for UCD in the Sigerson Cup during the week – complete the attack .

In total there are only six players included from the starting team that played Clare in last year’s championship – Brody, Collins, O’Loughlin, Farrell, Walsh and Attride.

The game on Saturday gets underway at 7pm in O’Moore Park.
