Bottle banks attracting dumping and vermin

Bottle Banks

Recycling has resulted in dumping at bottle banks around Laois.

Issues came to concern since after Christmas to locals.

Local councillors are blaming the public and companies for not emptying banks quickly enough.

Councillors reported the dumping at the January meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

Cllr Mary Sweeney said she is “not sure if it’s the solution” after seeing the problem at bottle banks in Ballyroan.

“They are attracting vermin”, she said. In Portlaoise Cllr Willie Aird said he was “inundated” with people phoning him about full bottle banks.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly from Abbeyleix said that ” They should be emptied, but if they are full, bring home your bags.”

Leaving boxes of recyclables beside full bottle banks is considered dumping.

This is liable to a €150 fine.
