Bad weather virtually wipes out local soccer fixtures

The Stradbally Town team which defeated Mucklagh on Saturday before the bad weather

It rained, sleeted and snowed this weekend and that took its toll on the local soccer scene with a number of games cancelled.

10 CCFL games were due to feature Laois teams on Sunday but only one of these went ahead.

That was a Division 4 clash between Rosenallis B and Cloneygowan Celtic – and they played out a 1-1 draw.

Stradbally Town were due to take on Portarlington Town in Division 2 and while that game did not fall victim to the weather, it did not go ahead as Portarlington could not field a team.

There was better luck for the Youths teams who play their games on Saturdays – with two Laois teams taking a step closer to their respective league titles.

Emo Celtic made it nine straight wins in the CCFL U-19 Premier Division by defeating Birr Town 6-1 to move 11 points clear at the top of the table.

While Portlaoise B also remained on course for glory in the U-19 Division 1 as their 5-0 win over Abbeyleix kept them seven ahead of Clonaslee who also defeated Kilbeggan.

While at U-17 level, Stradbally Town recorded a massive win over Mucklagh to edge closer to the top half of the table.

The Offaly side actually took the lead early on but a brace from Mick Kelly and another from Aidan Hanrahan gave Stradbally a 3-1 advantage at the break.

Ciarán O’Neill bagged a brace on the resumption of play with Darragh Carolan adding a sixth before Mick Kelly put the icing on the cake by completing his hat-trick.

The weather did not seem to hurt the Carlow and Kilkenny soccer leagues as badly as in the Midlands.

A number of Laois teams were involved in the Carlow Cup and all of them recorded wins.

Meanwhile, in Division 3, Wolfhill Athletic remain on course for league honours after a fine 4-1 win over second placed Nurney Villa B.

While in Kilkenny, Durrow Lions AFC, Ballacolla and Clover United were all in action.
