€200,000 in funding granted for works on ‘fatal’ Portarlington road

Accident Kilmullan

There is good news for residents living near Kilmullan in Portarlington as substantial funding has been allocated to improve a road which has been the scene of a number of accidents lately.

A man was killed on the R420 at Killamullan back in August and a number of other accidents occurred on the same stretch of road since.

Locals have been ‘living in fear’ that another fatal incident will happen ever since.

But now Cllr Tom Mulhall has revealed that the Department of Transport has released funding to tackle the road safety measures.

He said: “I welcome the funding granted  of €200,000 from the Department of Transport for road safety measures on the R420 at Killamullan.

“This funding is part of an application from Laois County Council to the Department under the road safety remedial measures scheme.

“This road has seen a number of accidents in recent times some of these accidents were very serious and the residents were very concerned about the number of accidents that has taken place outside their homes. Some of these residents had some very frighting experiences.

“The residents called a public meeting with public representatives and had meetings with council engineers to discuss the safety issues on the road.

“Laois County Council erected two solar speed signal signs on the road last September which seem to be working successful.

“With this extra funding for further road safety measures, it should make this road safer to travel on within the speed limit.”
