For the second year running, Clonaslee College have been crowned North Leinster hurling champions.

And they had star forward DJ Callaghan to thank as his dazzling hat-trick laid the foundations for a great win.

The team, coached by Kevin Callaghan and Simon Lyons, won this competition last year after defeating Dunshaughlin of Meath

And they were similarly impressive here as, playing with the breeze in the first half, they built up a big lead.

Callaghan shot 2-2 in that period while newly named Laois minor hurling captain Conor Cosgrove chipped in with two points.

His midfield partner Jack Friel did the same while full forward Eoin Dunne notched a third goal before wing back Shane Farrell landed a monster point to leave Clonaslee 3-7 to 0-6 ahead by half time.

The Laois school only managed four mores scores in the second period but they were crucial.

The home side rallied with a goal but DJ Callaghan soon completed his hat-trick to knock them back.

And Clonaslee College weren’t finished there either as Conor Cosgrove helped himself to 1-2 in the time that remained to seal a nine point win in the end.

Clonaslee College will now go on to contest the Leinster final, a competition they also won last year.
