The Downey’s Nissan Laois Senior Road Races took place in Fisherstown this morning in glorious weather as St Abban’s dominated the men’s event with Ballyroan-Abbeyleix winning the women’s team gold despite missing out on individual medals.
St Abban’s Sean Geoghegan won the men’s 8K race in a time of 27.20, four seconds ahead of Cian McDonald from Ballyroan-Abbeyleix who just pipped Brian Kelly (St Abban’s) to silver.
St Abban’s easily took the team gold with Colm Burke in 4th and Colin Coyne in 11th completing their team.
Lisa Sweeney from St Michael’s AC in Portarlington won the women’s 5K race in a time of 14.26 ahead of the Grant sisters from Portlaoise. Sharon was second in 14.44 with Paula third in 15.03.
The team event was was impressively claimed by Ballyroan-Abbeyleix as their runners filled the next four places.
Sorcha Maloney led them home with sisters Breda and Kate McDonald and Laois camogie player Louise Mahony making up the team.
As well as the senior, there was also a schedule of underage races from U-8 up to U-16.
Oughaval won both U-16 races with Orla Hartigan winning the girls and Oisin Jago claiming gold in the boys while Amy Hyland from Rosenallis-Kilcavan won the U-14 girls and Evan English from St Abban’s was the winner of the boys.
The U-12 races were won by Evanna Ryle (Rosenallis-Kilcavan) and Fionn Cuddy (Portlaoise) while Hannah Burke (Ballyroan-Abbeyleix) and Kalem Buggy (St Abban’s) won the U-10. Fionn Duggan (Oughaval) and Clodagh Tarrant (Ballyroan-Abbeyleix) were the U-8 winners.
