Two fire stations in Laois will get an upgrade after funding of €280,000 for the works was confirmed this week.

Mountmellick Fire Station, which was flooded in recent months,  is to get €150,00. The fire station in Mountrath will received funding of €130,000.

The funding was confirmed this week at the monthly meeting of Laois County Council by chief executive John Mulholland.

Welcoming the news, Cllr James Kelly said he hoped the work would start very soon.

Mountmellick-based Cllr Paddy Bracken also commented on the allocation.

“The funding for the upgrade of the fire station is certainly very welcome,” he said. “That area flooded in November”.

The fire station is situated in the Irishtown area of Mountmellick, one of the areas worst hit by flooding last November.

A wide area on the Portlaoise side of Mountmellick at Irishtown, including the fire station itself, suffered extensive flooding at the time, with the road there impassable for a time.

There was additional flooding again there earlier this year.
