The death has occurred of Jim Gannon, the well-known Portlaoise Pharmacist whose family served the town for many generations.

Gannon’s Pharmacy on Main Street in Portlaoise was where Breslin’s Pharmacy now stands. The Gannon family lived on Jessop Street, where Jessop Street Dental Practice is now.

Highly regarded in the town, Jim sold the business in the mid 1990s and later retired to live in Dublin.

Jim’s father also ran a pharmacy shop in Portlaoise, meaning the family’s association with healthcare in the town goes back almost a century.

Jim died peacefully in the devoted care of Dr Eoin Tiernan, the nurses and the Staff of St Vincent’s Private Hospital.

He was the beloved and dearly loved husband of Maeve and the late Anne. He will be deeply missed by his sons Paul, Jimmy, and Bill, daughters Mary, Sarah and Carina, sons and daughters-in-law, brothers, Anthony and Ignatius, sisters Gabe and Gertie, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, his cherished grandchildren, nieces and nephews, extended family and a wide circle of friends.

Jim’s funeral mass takes place in the Church of St. Thérèse, Mount Merrion on Thursday morning, May 3, at 10am followed by burial at Deans Grange Cemetery.

Family flowers only please, donations, if desired, to the Fr McVerry Trust. House private.
