Mark Barry helped himself to 1-4 as O’Dempsey’s got the better of Portlaoise this evening in the Old Pound, a result that sees them end the first phase of league games in joint second place alongside Portlaoise, Stradbally and The Heath.

It was a game that pitted last year’s county champions against the league champions and for the second year running, O’Dempsey’s continued their good league form against Malachy McNulty’s side.

First-half goals from Mark Barry and Michael Finlay helped them to a 2-8 to 0-7 win and although Bruno McCormack and Ronan McEvoy got goals for Portlaoise in the second half, it wasn’t enough to reel in O’Dempsey’s who won by four points in the end.

The result means Portlaoise now have lost their two games since their incredible 40-point win over Stradbally, with Graiguecullen beating them last week. They end the first phase of games with four wins and three losses, the same as O’Dempsey’s.

The other Division 1A game this evening saw Stradbally get the better of The Heath while St Joseph’s were given a walkover by Portarlington. Ballylinan play Graiguecullen in the other Round 7 game on Monday evening.
