Laois farmers set to cook up a storm for a worthy cause this weekend

Get your knives and forks ready – one of the biggest summer barbecues in Laois is taking place this weekend.

Farmers from near and far are set to gather for the Camross branch of Macra na Feirme’s annual summer barbecue on Saturday night, July 14.

Proceeds from this huge fundraiser will be divided, with half the funds raised going to Midlands United Powerchair Football Club and the other half going to Camross Macra.

All the action is taking place at the Camross Inn, most commonly known as Bergin’s, with the fun set to kick off from 9.00pm.

Music will be provided by well-known local singer and musician Martin Delaney.

Tickets allow the holder to sample a buffet-style barbecue meal cost €10 each. There is also a chance to win the prestigious prize of a Galway GAA jersey signed by the reigning All-Ireland Senior Hurling champions.

Raffle tickets and a large range of prizes will be on sale on the night.

The barbecue has been an annual event in the area for several years and is described as being an excellent community-bonding event, in the typical Macra ‘Know Your Neighbour’ ethos.

Camross Macra chairperson Danielle Thompson spoke to agriland.ie ahead of the event. “All are welcome to our barbecue. Camross Macra has chosen to fundraise for a great local cause,” said Danielle.

Laois Macra na Feirme awards night

Laois Macra na Feirme are also using the event to hold their annual awards night, following a successful year with multiple national titles won in 2018.

The fundraising element of the night also cannot be forgotten. The Midlands United Powerchair Football Club is heading to the European Championships in October. Funds from the barbecue will go towards kits and travel for members.

So come along and enjoy a good burger and steak all for a good cause.
