Three Laois women are making their mark in the UEFA champions league for Wexford Youths

Three Laois women are taking to the world stage of the UEFA Champions League for their Wexford Youths side.

Kylie Murphy, Orla Casey and Caimh Gray (formerly Dollard) are all lining out for the Wexford Youths as they take on some of Europe’s top teams including Dutch champions Ajax, Icelandic champions Thor KA and northern Ireland champions Linfield Ladies.

Indeed, Graiguecullen native Kylie has been captain for the side for seven years – and she is joined by the U19 Abbeyleix star Orla Casey and goalkeeper Caimh Gray.

Caimh joined the side this year and has previously served as a GAA goalkeeper for the Laois Ladies for an incredible 10 years. Caoimh was also previously involved in the Irish setup from U15 up to U19. We spoke to her after the match against Ajax on Tuesday night.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” said Caimh. “We’re playing with and against the finest calibre of players here – it’s amazing.”

Wexford Youths were unlucky to lose 4-1 against the renowned Dutch side, but the fact that they went 1-0 up against the professional outfit is certainly something to be admired.

“When Rianna (Jarrett) scored that goal – awh the feeling was electric!” said Caimh. And it looks as if the Portlaoise woman didn’t do too badly herself.

Caimh says the level of professionalism and the support given to her by her career in the Defence Forces makes the opportunity of playing in the champions league even greater.

“The level of professionalism is amazing. Doctors and physios at all of our trainings, hot meals afterwards, we’re just well looked after. I’m very lucky too that the Army faciliate people playing sports. They take great pride in their members playing sport at a high level, they’re very accomodating,” added Caimh.

Wexford Youths are no playing Icelandic Champions Thor KA in Seaview Stadium, Belfast, tonight, Friday August 10 at 7.30pm. They have a very quick turnaround before they take on Linfield in the last of their group matches on Monday evening.
