Hawkes leads Clough-Ballacolla to U14 shield victory

Clough-Ballacolla 5-2 Banrion Gaels 1-2
U14 camogie shield final

The first of today’s triple header of action in Mountrath saw two relatively new camogie teams, Clough-Ballacolla and Banrion Gaels, go head to head in the U14 shield final.

Leaders stepped up for both teams, with Anna Bishop and Aoibhe McMahon making great striding runs through for Banrion Gaels. However Caoimhe Kieran made the full-back position her own, blocking any shots through the centre of her defence.

Clough-Ballacolla got the first score on the board, with vice captain Rebecca Pearson hitting the upright for her captain Sophieann Hawkes to find the sliotar and slip it into the back of the net for her first goal.

Clough-Ballacolla’s second goal came in a similar fashion, with Pearson finding Hawkes, who leathered the ball into the left-hand side of the net.

Rachel Whelan put her name behind Clough-Ballacolla’s third goal and Seamus Brennan’s side went 3-0 up.

Banrion Gaels were unlucky to see some of their shots drop short, but their luck changed as the powerful Aoibhe McMahon handpassed the ball off to Sophie Tallon, who found Anna Bishop – who launched the ball high into the Clough-Ballacolla net on the stroke of half-time to leave two goals between the sides.

Caoimhe Kirwan stepped up again with stellar defending for her side, while Katie Henneberry did extremely well to bat out Holly Hanway’s shot. McMahon got a fine point for Banrion Gaels while Niamh Ryan did the same for Clough-Ballacolla to leave her side 3-1 to 1-1 up after 43 minutes,

Both sides fought extremely hard in defence, with neither one wanting to conceed first. Natasha Rowan would be the first to break this, with  fine 25 yard free for Banrion Gaels.

Clodagh Dunne earned and converted a long range free before captain Sophieann Hawkes lead her side into the lead, adding a goal and a point to her tally to leave Clough-Ballacolla 5-2 to 1-2 victors at full-time.
