Laois winners in the National Tidy Towns competition announced

A total of four Laois towns and villages were named in the national Tidy Towns competition today.

In the Laois county awards, Abbeyleix claimed first, while  Castletown came second and Ballacolla third.

This means that Abbeyleix retained the gold medal for the fourth year in a row, while Portlaoise retained their silver medal.

Endeavour award

Mountmellick Tidy Towns also received the Endeavour award in Laois for the biggest improvement from the previous year.

Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council John King called for a ‘bualadh bos’ for each of the areas in the latest Laois County Council meeting today.

Cllr Willie Aird also acknowledged the late cllr Jerry Lodge, who he says would have been delighted, given his strong involvement with Portlaoise Tidy Towns.

The national winners were:

Ireland’s Tidiest Town 2018 – Listowel, Co Kerry.

Ireland’s Tidiest Village – Glaslough, Co Monaghan.

Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town – Listowel, Co Kerry.

Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town – Westport, Co Mayo.

Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre – Ballincollig, Co Cork.
