‘This is very serious, it’s the fate of small children’ councillor voices concern about safety in Ballyroan

“I am anxious, it’s just not a safe place for children,” said cllr Mary Sweeney when referring to Blandsfort Cross, Ballyroan, at the latest Portlaoise Muncipal District meeting.

Cllrs John Joe Fennelly, Catherine Fitzgerald and Mary Sweeney all voiced concerns about road safety for children at the cross.

‘I certainly don’t want to see any child fall down 15 feet’

“The footpath is even gone. The biggest problem is fencing. I reckon there’s a 15 ft trough. I certainly don’t want to see any child fall down 15 feet,” said cllr Fennelly.

Senior engineer Wes Wilkinson replied to the motion, saying: “The grass verges and hedges at this location were cut back in the last two weeks. This location has been included on the list of works for our Line Marking Contractor and will be carried out over the coming weeks.”

Cllr Sweeney said that she would request that the council amend the cross, ‘before something happens’.

Caothaoirleach of the municipal district, Catherine Fitzgerald, agreed and said that something needs to be done urgently.
