Courageous Conlon and dynamic Dunne lead Sarsfields to Ladies Leinster final

Sarsfields 4-12 Miltown (Westmeath) 1-10
Leinster LGFA senior club championship Semi Final

Sarsfields are through to their first Leinster final since 2015 following an inspired victory in Mountmellick this afternoon.

Laois scoring ace Clare Conlon scored two goals in the second half to leave Gerry O’Flathery’s side on course for their first Leinster title since 2014 and what would be their fourth in total.

She was joined by a brilliant display from Joyce Dunne who tormented Milltown with her powerful running.

This will be Sarsfields sixth final to compete in and they will face Dublin champions Foxrock-Cabinteely who are going for their fourth Leinster title in a row.

They defeated Sarsfields back in 2015 so the Laois side will be out for revenge when clash in the final.

But back to today and Sarsfields made a brilliant start as an early Ciara Burke goal along with points from Lorna O’Sullivan and Clare Conlon gave them a three point lead after ten minutes.

However, the Westmeath champions came back with the excellent Sarah Dillon pointing twice either side of a white flag from Leanne Slevin before Grainne Byrne struck for a goal to leave them ahead by 1-3 to 1-2 at the midpoint of the half.

Sarsfields drew back level via Ciara Burke and we were still deadlocked heading for the final five minutes of the half as Leanne Slevin and Mary Keating traded efforts.

But Sarsfields finished the half strongly with a goal from Joyce Dunne and a point from Conlon to take a 2-5 to 1-4 lead.

Of course, these scores couldn’t happen without the work done further out the field – with Rosemarie Bermingham, Alison McEvoy and Amy Loughman putting in a stellar shift for O’Flaherty’s side.

The sides traded points on the resumption of play before Conlon scored his first goal to put clear daylight between the teams.

Milltown kept going but Conlon’s second goal gave them far to great of a mountain to climb and Sarsfields deservedly saw out the game with 11 points to spare.
