What an absolute cracker of a game.

Courtwood have advanced to the Leinster intermediate semi-final after beating Louth champions St Mochtas in what was a tighly-contested battle right up until the 64th minute of play.

The main issue for Courtwood coming into this game was sure to be five weeks without playing a competitive game.

St Mochtas led on three occasions in the first ten minutes but Courtwood constantly hauled this back.

Both sides kicked five wides a piece within the first 30 minutes as St Mochtas just appeared to have that upper hand in terms of scoring chances.

Declan Byrne proved to be the main attacking threat but Courtwood defended in numbers, and denied a key goal chance for St Mochtas on the stroke of half-time.

They trailed behind the Louth champions 0-8 to 1-4 at the break but shook the cobwebs off in the second half to do the damage.

Cian Doyle proved the value of an impact sub and his two points, along with a vital score from Matthew Kelly – sent Courtwood into the lead for the first time in the game after 36 minutes.

A well-worked Sean O’Flynn goal – helped in part by Alan Kinsella –  put St Mochtas away for 15 minutes without a score as it looked like Courtwood would sail to victory.

However a Ciaran McMahon goal in the 58 minute caused a rumble as the Laois side’s lead slipped from five points to two.

They held on for the remaining six minutes to see out the game two point victors.

Courtwood now take on Kidlare side Two Mile House GAA in the Leinster semi-final in two weeks time.
