Portlaoise school looking forward to two All Ireland Semi Finals

Scoil Chriost Ri can look forward to two All Ireland Semi Finals after Christmas after superb wins by their Senior A and U14 A teams in the Subway Cup competitions.

The Senior A team began their campaign with a big win against Kiltimagh 91 to 35. They then met last year’s All Ireland Championship winners Leixlip.

The standard of play from both teams was top class and SCR just got over the line with an overtime 82 to 79 win. They then beat Pres Castleisland in the Quarter Final 60 to 44. Last year’s Cup Champions Clontarf await in the Semi Final in January. Clontarf are favourites to win the Cup this year but if SCR can reproduce the form they showed against Leixlip and a little more, they could make it through to the final.

The Senior A All Ireland is the only title that has alluded the school. The Senior A team are also unbeaten in the Midland/South East Regional Championships topping their group with wins over Bower Athlone, Clonaslee, Kilcullen. They play Loreto Kilkenny in the semi-final.

The Cadette U16A team lost to Cup Favourites Colaiste Einde Galway 45 to 34 but are unbeaten in the Midland/South East Regional Championships with two excellent wins over Bower Athlone and Clonaslee. They play Mercy Waterford in their semi-final.

The Senior B team were pipped at the post in the Midland Regional Championship Quarter-Final when they lost by one basket to Tullamore College while the Cadette B team lost out in the group stages.

Having beaten Loreto Stephen’s Green in their opening game, the U14 A Cup team had a massive win against a very strong Regina Mundi team from Cork in the All Ireland Quarter Final.

The team demonstrated high levels of skill, composure and fighting spirit for their age group and they now look forward to an All Ireland Semi Final in the National Arena in February.

It is shaping up for another very successful season on the basketball courts for Scoil Chriost Ri with the added bonus of a World Championship to look forward to in April.
