2018 Remembered – Hugely successful Laois personal trainer to open new gym

Back in July, Emmet Quinlan opened his gym EQ Strength and Conditioning, and has enjoyed savage success since.

We are sure 2019 will be another stellar year for Quinlan.

Borris-in-Ossory man Emmet Quinlan began his career as a personal trainer a number of years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

From humble beginnings, 24 year old Emmet has built his business up to train hundreds of clients – from national boxing champion Conor Ivors, world champion Irish dancers to the Cistercian College rugby Senior Schools Cup team to numerous Senior GAA teams including Camross, Roscrea and Shinrone.

Emmet knows exactly what it takes to get into the best physical condition possible as he recently competed in his first body building show in Waterford.

Due to the phenomenal success and demand for his personal training services, the Laois man is now opening a new, spacious, state of the art gym just down the road in Roscrea.

We spoke to former Leinster boxing competitor about his career, opening his new gym and where he thinks the fitness industry can go from here.

How did you get involved in the fitness industry?

“I’ve always had a keen interest in sports. I played GAA from a young age and won numerous county titles with my club Borris/Kilcotton at U-12, U-14, U-16 and minor level.

“When I was 12 or 13 I also took up boxing and I found that I was really interested in training and nutrition side of things,” said Emmet.

He continued to box in Abbeyleix and Ballyroan for four years, and managed to win an impressive three county titles and competed in the IABA Leinster and Irish Championships.

“I stepped away from boxing and began lifting weights. My main focus was on training and nutrition so I enrolled in Level 5 Qualification in Sports and Recreation from Portlaoise College,” he added.

In an industry where it is perceived that anyone can be a personal trainer, it is refreshing to know that Emmet is the real deal. He graduated with a 1:1 in a BSc Sports Strength and Conditioning degree from Limerick Institute of Technology and continues to educate himself about fitness and nutrition.

“I’m currently studying a Level 1 in Precision Nutrition and after I finish this I will continue to attend seminars, complete courses and educate myself.

“I’m always learning and it is vital to constantly educate yourself in all the various aspects of the industry” said Emmet.

What makes you and your gym different from the rest?

“I’m in it for the long haul. I’ve had a passion for fitness and nutrition for years. I’ve worked with so many different people from all walks of life since day one and have gained some invaluable experience.

“My goal is to help as many people as I possibly can to make healthy lifestyle changes, improve their way of life and enjoy the process while doing so.

“Optimising health being the number one priority. My gym, caters for everybody from the complete beginner to the elite level athlete,” he said.

Can you tell us anything about your new gym?

“Ah, I have a few surprises coming,” Emmet laughed. “I can tell you that it is opening in Ashbury Industrial Estate in Roscrea and we are having a huge launch day for it. It is really going to be state of the art. Fully kitted out by an Irish Based Company – Grip Gym Gear.”

Emmet has managed to get brands such as Fulfill Nutrition, Flexi Nutrition and Little Dragon supplements and Barron’s Raheen to come down to Roscrea for the day as he opens the spacious new gym facility.

EQ Strength and Conditioning gym opens its doors on Monday, July 30 and will hold its official opening launch on Saturday, August 25 at 12 noon.
