Laois soccer player named in Republic of Ireland U-16 squad for upcoming friendlies

Colin Conroy was named in today's starting 11 against Germany

One Laois teenager has been named in the Republic of Ireland U-16 squad for two huge friendlies.

Former Portlaoise AFC player Colin Conroy has been named in the 18-man squad for two games against Germany and Australia.

Conroy, who now plays for Bohemians, where he was named Player of the Year last season, is one of 14 players in manager Paul Osam’s squad who are based in the SSE Airtricity League.

Osam’s squad travel to Spain this week to play Germany in La Manga on Saturday January 12, before returning to Dublin to face Australia in the FAI National Training Centre, a week later, on January 19.

Republic of Ireland Under-17 Head Coach Colin O’Brien will travel to La Manga to watch the team in action against Germany, and will also be in attendance the following week, when the team meet Australia.

Osam says the two games represent a chance for players to impress ahead of the UEFA Under-17 Championships later this year in Ireland.

“We don’t have a massive pool of players at any age grade because of the size of the country. There is always potential for the Under-16s to push their way into the Under-17 squad.

“Colin [O’Brien] comes to a lot of our games. He wants to see if the players are good enough to play in the European Championships.”
