Frank Flanagan’s University of Limerick made a winning start to the Sigerson Cup with a one point win over Dublin Institute of Technology this evening.

The Portlaoise defender started corner back for the Munster college who recorded a win that sees them into Round 3 of the competition.

There was Laois interest on both sides as current Laois U-20 boss Billy O’Loughlin is a selector on the defeated DIT team.

Killeshin’s Shane Bolger and St Joseph’s Jason Campion are part of the DIT panel but neither of them featured in the game.

However, it is not the end of the road for DIT as the Sigerson Cup this year contains a back door.

DIT now head for Round 2 where they will play one of the seven other losers from the games that are to be played over the next few days.

Clare footballer Kealen Sexton was the difference on the night as he scored 1-10 in the game – a stunning display.

Laois interest in the competition continues tomorrow as holders UCD begin their campaign against Cork IT while Garda College also play IT Sligo.

Both UCD and Garda College have strong Laois representation.
