Portlaoise RFC minis welcomed Athy RFC to Togher recently for a rugby blitz.
Mini rugby covers the age groups from under 7s up to under 12s.
It aims to coach the basic skills of rugby in a safe and fun environment and to help young people develop physically, psychologically and socially.
Upwards of 300 children along with their parents arrived at Togher in perfect playing conditions, to test their skills between these two neighbouring clubs.
From the under 7s, coached by current men’s first team player and club stalwart Will Sherlock, who show great determination as they start their rugby journey, up to the under 12s, where it is clear they have benefited from the excellent coaching they have received over the years.
Both clubs can boast former mini players as current Irish internationals, with Joey Carbery starting in Athy, and Portlaoise’s latest Irish representative, Emma Hooban, having recently broken into the Irish Womens team, where, hopefully she is poised to have a long career.
All in all, a great day of rugby, where all the teams were winners.
Portlaoise minis train and play matches on Saturday morning at 10 30am, new players are always welcome. Any enquiries contact Philip Bradley 0872043703.
