CANCELLED: Popular St Patrick’s Day parade in Laois will not go ahead this year

A popular St Patrick’s Day parade in Laois will not take place this year.

St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Portarlington have been called off due to rising costs and lack of volunteers.

Chair of the committee is Catriona Greene. Catriona was speaking about the decision to call off the parade on March 17 on Midlands 103 today.

“At the minute we have no committee members that can come back on board bar myself, and volunteers.

“Like we need between 30 or 40 on the day that can help us line the streets and keep it safe and make the event run. But we just don’t have that this year.”

Portarlington isn’t the first town to faced with having no St Patrick’s Day parade.

Last year, Portlaoise parade looked to be on and off the cards until it eventually went ahead.
