Ladies School’s Senior D South Leinster Football Semi Final

Football in Scoil Chriost Ri continues to scale new heights as, following on from recent Leinster success for their Seniors and Juniors, the Portlaoise school’s Senior B side enjoyed a fantastic win yesterday.

Scoil Chríost Rí’s Senior B team reached the South Leinster D final following a hard-fought three point win against St Finian’s College Mullingar..

The Portlaoise girls had home advantage which really made the girls feel comfortable before the throw in knowing they were playing on their own turf.

The game started off slowly with both teams finding it difficult to get a score. The teams were evenly matched and during the beginning of the first half, everyone knew it was going to be a tough battle for a spot in the South Leinster final in the coming weeks.

A great run from centre back from Gillian Keenan saw a lovely pass in to centre forward Leah Loughman, who charged forward towards goal and nicely slotted it in past the Mullingar keeper to the bottom right hand corner to open the scoring for the game.

Only minutes later, a good ball down the line from Gráinne O’Reilly was won nicely by Kerrie Costello, who was supported by Leah Loughman with a one-two movement, before Costello rattled the top left corner for Chríost Rí’s second goal of the game.

Mullingar knew they needed to get going as the clock was ticking in the first half. Some good play from the Finian’s girls led to the ball placed in the back of the Portlaoise net for their first score of the game.

Finian’s were then awarded a penalty when Scoil Chriost Ri’s Alison Kelly fouled inside the square, but keeper Aimee Keane saved it brilliantly.

Finnian’s scored two frees before the break to leave it 2-0 to 1-2 at half time.

Chríost Rí started strong in the second half as centre back Gillian Keenan was moved into the middle of the field.

A great supporting play from Anna Healy with Keenan after the Portlaoise midfielders won the throw in, led to Keenan racing forward towards goal before burying the ball in the back of the net to start the second half.

Some good play forward from Aoibhe O’Brien, Grace Salmon, Lisa Buggy and Kerrie Costello led to Loughman scoring her first point of the game from play.

The Mullingar girls did not drop their heads, as they scored a point from play to keep them in the game.

After some great play from substitute Rachel Glynn, a foul on Costello led to Loughman stepping up to comfortably slot the ball between the posts for her second point of the game.

The Mullingar girls kept on charging forward towards goal but absolutely nothing was getting in past the superb Aimee Keane and her full back line.

Alison Kelly and Maria Luttrell’s defending was outrageous throughout the second half, as well as the rest of the Portlaoise defenders.

The Mullingar girls slotted over two more points but that wasn’t enough to beat Scoil Chríost Rí who at the final whistle won by three points.

A superb game of football which saw neither sides give up and both fought until the bitter end, but Chríost Rí came out on top deservedly and now look forward to a South Leinster final in the coming weeks.
