It was a busy weekend of mixed results for Laois teams in both the Combined Counties Football League and the Carlow and District Football League.
While St. Carthages Athletic v Stradbally Town was called off, many matches went ahead – including the second round of the Paddy Cotter Cup featuring Rosenallis and Clonaslee while Mountmellick Utd played their first competitive CCFL match of 2019.
See below for individual match reports, CCFL and CDFL results and a look at the CDFL league as it currently stands.
John Farrell Combined Counties Cup 2nd Round
Mountmellick United 3 Mullingar Athletic 2
Mountmellick United got their 2019 CCFL campaign off to a winning start against Mullingar Athletic today.
Tom Christie and Mark Goodwin’s charges went one goal up and led at halftime against a strong breeze.
Mullingar Athletic equalized immediately after half time but Mountmellick kept composure and Mark Grennan scored his second 15 minutes later.
Mountmellick struck some luck when Robbie Hibbits went to cross the ball and the strong breeze carried it into top corner over the keepers reach.
With two mins to go Mullingar got a dubious penalty which they scored. Mountmellick held on and played well with notable performances by Mark Dowling, Keith Ryan and Brandon Cooper.
MOUNTMELLICK UTD: Matsy Forde, Brandon Cooper, Robbie Conran, John F Watchorne, Daniel O’Riordan, Kieran Carroll, Mark Dowling, Keith Ryan, Eoghan O’Riordan, Robbie Hibbitts, Mark Grennan.
Paddy Cotter Cup 2nd Round
Clonaslee United 1 O’Moores FC 0
Clonaslee started the game well – retaining the ball and creating some good chances in the first 25 minutes.
But it was O’Moores who came closest to scoring when a shot across almost resulted in the opener. This sparked United into life.
James Mac won a ball and was fouled 25 yards from goal. He hit the resulting free kick up and over the wall which gave O’Moores keeper no chance. Clonaslee played out the half with more of the ball but couldn’t find a second goal in the remaining minutes.
Right from the start O’Moores had Clonaslee on the back foot in the second half. They had all the ball and Clonaslee couldn’t get out of their own half for long.
Clonaslee’s defence was never really under pressure though. The closest O’Moores got to a goal was a header tipped onto the crossbar. Clonaslee saw out the game to progress to the next round.
Rosenallis 2-3 Monksland
Rosenallis gave everything in this game, battled hard and played some great football at times. Unfortunately they were very unlucky in the end not to at least force extra time.
Monksland took the lead 10 minutes before half time from a break away attack after a Rosenallis corner.
Rosenallis then equalised five minutes later with Jack Friel scoring from a fantastic free kick which was curled into the box and was missed by everyone before it snuck in at the back post. It finished 1-1
Monksland then went 2-1 up early in the second half after another quick counter attack move.
Rosenallis fought back well and were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes remaining, which was excellently dispatched into the top corner by Donagh Calally.
The game was very even in the closing stages with either team more than deserving of the win, but Monksland managed to get in behind the defence one last time to score with only minutes remaining to steal the win.
