Defeat for Portlaoise RFC in penultimate league game

Leinster Rugby League Division 2A

Portlaoise RFC’s faint hopes of promotion back to Division 1B of the Leinster League are over after they were beaten by second placed Cill Dara in Togher this afternoon.

Portlaoise went into the game seven points behind their visitors in the table and really only a bonus point win would’ve given them a chance going into the final round of games.

However, Portlaoise were held scoreless over the 80 minutes as a strong second half from Cill Dara saw them take the four points that were on offer.

Portlaoise actually dominated most of the first half but just could not get a score of any description.

The Kildare side only managed to get out of their half on three occasions as Portlaoise dominated the territory but couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard.

They had three long range penalties in the half but they were all missed by Simon Williams as the sides went in 0-0 at half time.

Portlaoise continued to apply pressure but they got caught with a breakaway try which was the game’s first score after 54 minutes.

And then Cill Dara made the game safe seven minutes from the end with a push-over try to confirm the win.

Portlaoise finish their league campaign away to Mullingar on March 3 while they also face North Kildare in the Towns Cup Plate.
