SVT Activity and Wellness Hub (based in Stradbally, Vicarstown and Timahoe) has presented a shield for Junior parkrun.
Junior Parkrun is a 2k run along the Grand Canal bank for 4 to 14 year olds. It takes place every Sunday morning at 11am in Vicarstown.
In this first outing for the new primary school shield, the emphasis was on participation, with the shield being awarded to the school with the largest number of participants.
A massive 193 primary school students lined up along the canal bank last Sunday in glorious sunshine on the start line at the canal bank, all well supported by parents and siblings.
Will Craig of Killenard was the first boy to finish, with Della McLoughlin of Rath the first girl. The first 10 places were mostly filled by Killenard, Rath and Raheen pupils.
As the run progressed, the number of Rath runners finishing looked like they were certain to lift the trophy.
In the end St Colmans NS Stradbally won with 28 participants, pipped Rath who finished with 26.
Timahoe, Presentation Portarlington and The Heath weren’t too far behind. Overall, there were 12 schools represented, with children from Ballyfin, Killenard, Raheen, Emo, Ratheniska, Kilberry and Kildangan also participating.
The next outing for the shield will be in May, and an element of “performance” will be introduced – perhaps the schools with the most students under 13 minutes.
