A number of Laois students were in action yesterday in the All-Ireland School’s Cross Country championships.
Pupils from Knockbeg College, Heywood CS, Colaiste Iosagain and Scoil Chriost Ri took part in a range of age grades at the event in Clongowes Wood in Kildare.
While the Knockbeg footballers were making history reaching an All-Ireland U-16 football final, another member of the school was making history all by himself.
Ballylinan native Mackenzie McIvor lined up in the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country championship Minor Boys race this afternoon.
The event, held in Clongowes Wood in Kildare this afternoon, was ran over a 2.5km course.
The first year student raced prominently throughout and was right in contention as the race entered the closing stages.
In a sprint finish, McIvor were full out for a medal but was just touched off and finished fifth which is an absolutely incredible result.
McIvor was not the only Laois entrant in that race as Colaiste Iosagain’s Jack Fenlon ran a brilliant race too and came home in the Top 20.
Cian McDonald of Ireland’s Fittest Family fame lined up in the Senior Boys race for Heywood and finished a very credible 18th position.
The Junior Boys race contained Heywood’s Jack McMahon and he did brilliantly to finish in 23rd position.
We also had three girls in action also – Ava O’Connor and Laura Mooney of Scoil Chriost Ri and Faye McEvoy of Heywood CS.
Mooney finished in 42nd place in the Senior race while O’Connor ran in the Intermediate race and finished in 12th place, another remarkable performance.
Meanwhile, McEvoy competed in the Junior Girls race and finished 20th.
Well done to all our athletes. Check out the full results here.
