Dunamase College hosted Abbeyleix Hockey club U-14s for a friendly match in Portlaoise at the weekend to bring their first ever season to an end.
This lining out of the teams marks a high point for the development of Hockey in Laois.
With Dunamase College students, Abbeyleix Hockey Club players and Portlaoise Ladies Hockey Club referees all involved it marked, what will hopefully be, the beginning of a long and successful relationship between the school and the hockey clubs.
Dunamase College Parents Council also provided refreshments to both players and supporters during and after the match.
Such generosity and support fosters a strong sense of community for all involved.
Since taking up hockey in November; Dunamase College has set about carving out their own custom of active participation in sports teams and has begun to forge links with other schools.
Since January the school has been kindly hosted by The King’s Hospital School, The High School, Kilkenny College and Wesley College, Dublin.
While these schools have a long tradition of playing hockey, their hosting of Dunamase College set an excellent example of the level of sportsmanship required at schools level to all involved.
The dedication and diligence of the Dunamase College students to learn new skills and to understand the rules is a credit to them.
With a strengthening relationship between Abbeyleix Hockey Club, Portlaoise Ladies Hockey Club and Dunamase College it is an exciting time for the development and enhancement of the sport in Laois.
Muinteor Alison Bennett looks forward to introducing the sport to a new wave of students attending the fast expanding school, while also helping existing students to further cement their love of the game.
Fair play to all involved!
