It’s that time of the week again when we start to plan our weekends and as usual Laois doesn’t disappoint.

Rory’s Stories brings his hilarious show to Dunamaise Arts Centre. There are a number of runs and walks with the biggest one being Darkness into Light which is happening in Mountmellick, The Swan and Rathdowney and is a great one to support if you can.

The Bealtaine festival continues through the month of May with a number of lovely events. There truely is something for everyone.

THURSDAY 9 May

Watercolour Cards Workshop with artist Caroline Keane

Part of the Bealtaine Festival. Participants will learn some simple watercolour techniques to create simple and elegant cards or postcards.

The event takes place in Portarlington Library from 10.15am to 11.30am and is free. Booking is required as places are limited. To book call 057 8643751 or see here

Spuds & Spakes

Join Michael Creagh and guests in Rathdowney Library for a night of story and song.  

Sausages and Colcannon will also be served. The event begins at 8pm and is free but booking is recommended as places are limited.  ]To book call 0505 46852

FRIDAY May 3

Table Quiz – Portarlington

Friends Together Portarlington is holding a table quiz in the Anvil Inn. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and a raffle will also be run on the night with lots of great prizes.  The quiz begins at 9.30pm.

What’s The Story Rory?

This is social media star ‘Rory’s Stories’ debut theatre tour. Rory’s Stories takes a hilarious and frank look at every aspect of Irish life, from the GAA to the Guards and everything in between.

Golf Classic in aid of Kolbe Special School

The golf classic is running Friday and Saturday in Rathdowney Golf Club with prizes and presentations at 9.30pm on Saturday.

It costs €100 for team of 4 and all proceeds go to Klobe Special School. There are a limited number of tee times still available. To book a slot contact Alan 085 2804020 or Jason 086 8380843

The Lonesome West

Clodlagh Players in association with Mullingar Theatre Lab present the award winning comedy by Martin McDonagh.  This black comedy is funny and bitter sweet and an excellent production.

It runs Friday and Saturday night in Clonaslee Parish Hall at 8pm and tickets are €10.  

SATURDAY MAY 11

Darkness Into Light

The annual Darkness Into Light walks are taking place in The Swan, Mountmellick and Rathdowney.  The walk, in aid of Peta House, starts at 4am with walkers crossing the finish line just as dawn is breaking. Come along and support a great cause.

EP Launch – Chasing Black Rainbows

Part of the Bealtaine Festival. Come and hear a new collection of songs by Ballylinan songwriter Paul Hickey along with his band ‘Soakin’ Rope’. The evening will also feature Luggacurren traditional group ‘Ól, Ceol agus Craic’.

The evening is supported by the Arts Office and the Bealtaine festival.  This will be a small intimate event with a warm welcome for all who attend.

So come along to Luggacurren Community Hall from 8.30pm-10.30pm and tickets are just €5 and are available at the door. For more information see here

The Valves

The Valves play Kavanaghs Bar & Venue on Saturday night. They are always a Portlaoise favourite and there is no cover charge. The gig begins at 9.30pm.

SUNDAY MAY 12 

5km Colour Run -Togher Woods

This is a great fun way to have some fun and get a run in at the same time.  The Colour run is in aid of Portlaoise Camogie Club and begins at 12 noon.

Adults are €15 and children are €10 with a family ticket costing €40. Early bird tickets available on Eventbrite.ie

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is the Kinnitty Bluebell Walk.  This walk is a Grade A  10km walk and takes 4 hours so is suited for those with a good level of fitness.  

Meeting point is at Kinnitty Community Centre at 11am. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family). For more information see www.slievebloom.ie.

Aedeen O’Hagan Ballet- Alice in Wonderland

Aedeen O’Hagan Ballet School are hosting their show Alice in Wonderland where Children from 3.5 years to 18 will perform in this wonderful adventure. The show promises great music, dancing and costumes.

A feast for the senses! There are 2 performances in the Dunamaise Arts Centre at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets cost €18, €12 /Family ticket for 4 €50. To book see phone 057 86 63355.

The Jury

Wrap up the weekend with The Jury playing in Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue at 7pm and there is no cover charge.
