Portlaoise took a step closer to the Division 1A final following a three point win over Ballyroan-Abbey tonight.

The Town now sit four points clear of Graiguecullen in second position in the table and also have a game in hand.

They meet the Barrowsiders in their next match where a win will see them qualify for a rematch of the county final from last October with O’Dempsey’s.

Ballyroan-Abbey are themselves in something of a relegation battle but they are three points clear of the dropzone with games against Arles-Kilcruise, O’Dempsey’s and St Joseph’s remaining.

Portlaoise won this game 2-14 to 2-11 with teenager Damon Larkin and forward Aaron Rafter striking for the goals.

Veteran Padraig McMahon was on target twice for Ballyroan-Abbey but it wasn’t enough as they fell to an eight defeat.

There is a huge game in the Division tomorrow night with the two bottom sides set to meet as Arles-Kilcruise host The Heath.
