Portlaoise AFC Ladies proved worthy winners after tough battle in Navan against new entrants to the KDFL, Torro United.

A depleted Portlaoise squad meant they could only field nine players against Torro’s 11.

Torro took the lead early on after a slight mix up in defence. Portlaoise didn’t give up and winger Caoimhe Kenna drew them level five minutes after with a great shot.

On the half hour mark, winger Catherine Delaney was taken down in the box resulting in a penalty which midfielder Coleen Rickard calmly converted.

Five minutes from the break Catherine Delaney took on the Torro defence and finished from close range to make it 3-1.

Torro made a threatening start to the second half and were unlucky not to score early on after a number of chances.

Winger Kenna got her second goal 10 minutes in after a great individual run.

Portlaoise were understandably tired and under pressure now and credit must be given to the back line of Labutyte, Westman, Hyland and keeper Keane who were so solid and kept their nerve through out.

Midfielder Amy Walsh covered huge ground during the game pressuring Turro relentlessly along with Emma Power who never gave up.

Turro pulled one back towards the end but Portlaoise held on and achieved a super win in a game where the odds were very much against them.

Portlaoise are still undefeated in the division one league having impressively beaten Edenderry Town last Monday night 6-0.
