Borris-Kilcotton are safely through to the knockout stages of the Laois SHC following a comfortable win over Abbeyleix in O’Moore Park this evening.

Borris-Kilcotton hit four first-half goals – including two in the first five minutes – and they never looked in any danger from early on.

Abbeyleix, who had the misfortune of being drawn in a group with the last three county champions, must now play Portlaoise in a relegation decider as they fell to their third straight loss, this at 20 points their biggest one to date.

Daire Quinlan got the game’s first goal after a couple of minutes and PJ Scully rifled one to the net shortly after. With just five minutes on the clock Borris-Kilcotton led 2-2 to 0-1.

Abbeyleix, to their credit, hit the next five points with three from Eoghan Fennelly and one each from Ciaran Byrne and the impressive Rory McEvoy.

Aaron Dunphy from play and two from Scully frees were wrapped around a second from Rory McEvoy but Borris-Kilcotton struck for their third goal when Scully gave Enda Rowland no chance from close range after good work from Neil Foyle.

Again Rory McEvoy responded but Quinlan and Aaron Dunphy reponded with points before Stephen Dunphy got their fourth goal after an initial good save from Rowland.

Aaron Carroll and Scully traded points with Borris-Kilcotton heading in at the break leading by 4-8 to 0-9.

The second half was a drab enough affair as PJ Scully continued to add to his account to finish with 2-9 in the end with Abbeyleix’s only scores in the second half coming from frees from Rowland and Fennelly.

Colm Stapleton got a fifth goal to round off the rout but by then attention was looking forward rather than back.

Both clubs will face bigger and more important battles in the coming weeks.
