Clonaslee 2-8 Mountmellick 1-4
Laois Shopping Centre IFC Semi-final

Intermediate football specialists Clonaslee are back in another county final in the grade following their seven-point win over Mountmellick this evening.

A first-half goal from Cian Barrett set them on their way as they opened a six-point lead after 17 minutes and never trailed after that, their patient possession game an absolutely crucial factor in their win.

As they had in their previous two games, Mountmellick played with Darren Fitzpatrick as an extra defender but they were very rusty in front of goals and shot eight wides in the first half.

They were also 1-3 to no score down midway through the first period, Clonaslee’s goal a brilliantly taken effort from Cian Barrett while Niall Corbet kicked two points and Jack Owens got one.

And Mountmellick would have went in at half time scoreless only for a hugely fortuitous goal from Jason Caffrey. As they headed for the dressing rooms, Clonaslee led 1-3 to 1-0.

Mountmellick abandoned the sweeper policy in the second half and their direct running began to cause Clonaslee problems.

Niall Mullen pointed an early free and though Glen McEvoy cancelled it out with a nice effort from play, two frees from Coss and ’45 from Eoghan Keogh had them level by the 45th minute.

A powerful run from Will Young put Clonaslee back in front in the 51st minute and then Corbet, after something of an off day on the frees, pointed a ’45 in the 56th minute.

Then Clonaslee pounced for the game’s defining goal, with Sean Dunne, not long on as sub, firing past Eoghan Keogh. Another sub Sean Condon added a point and it was safe from there.

Mountmellick, whose only score from play was that lucky first-half goal, will be bitterly disappointed at how their season has fizzled out and their intermediate stay continues for another year.

Clonaslee are back in a place they know well – in an another intermediate final.

They’ll go for a fifth title in the grade in 21 years when they meet Rosenallis or Portlaoise in the final in two weeks time.
