Late goals key as Camross see off The Harps to book U-20 final place

Laois U-20 HC Semi-final

Two goals in the last ten minutes were crucial as Camross got the better of The Harps in the second Laois U-20 HC semi-final in Borris-in-Ossory this afternoon.

Rob Tyrell and Niall Bennett struck for goals in the 51st and 58th minute respectively as Camross set up a final date with Raheen Parish Gaels and overturned the result from last year’s U-19 decider when The Harps got their hands on that silverware.

But Camross withstood a strong Harps challenge for the first 50 minutes of the game before making a break for it down the closing stretch and finishing up 11-point winners.

Evan Deegan hit seven points in the opening half as The Harps, without the injured Daniel Comerford, led 0-11 to 0-10 at the break. Ciaran Comerford and Podge Delaney chipped in with a point each while Conor Delaney got two.

For Camross, Eoin Gaughan led the way in the scoring stakes with Dan Delaney, Odhran Phelan and Tomas Keyes also on the mark.

Gaughan got the first three points of the second half for Camross and though Deegan pulled one back for The Harps to leave just one it entering the final quarter, Camross soon began to pull away.

Dan Delaney put them two clear before Tyrell struck for the decisive goal. Evan Deegan responded with a couple of points but Oisin Bennett, Liam Delaney and Dan Delaney got late points while Niall Bennett got in for their second goal.

Camross, who have won championships at U-12, U-14, U-16 and minor with this team will now look to round off a good year for the club with another title.
