2019 Remembered: Two businesses on Portlaoise Main Street close in June

Portlaoise General

Back in June, two well-known businesses closed down within a couple of weeks of each other:

Two eateries have closed on Main Street Portlaoise in the past few weeks.

La Lola Tapas and Chipmongers takeaway have both closed on Main Street.

La Lola Tapas, located on the prime location of 37 Main Street, has gone up for rent on Daft.ie.

Chairperson of Downtown Portlaoise, Alison Browne, spoke about the loss of the two restaurants.

“Obviously we hate to see any business close in Portlaoise,” said Alison.

She also spoke about how businesses can thrive on the Main Street, and spoke of ensuring that the right supports are there.

“There are great initiatives to setting up a business on the Main Street.

“I would encourage anyone hoping to set up a business on Main Street to contact the Business Support Unit or Laois Enterprise Office.”

The La Lolas restaurant/bar premises is €1,000 a month to rent for 915 sq. feet (85 sq. metres). At the time of writing, the property had been viewed 1,252 times after six days.

It opened for business before Christmas 2017 – and was run by Itxi Saila Ferrer, who is from the Basque region of Spain.

Chipmongers, located on 62 Main Street, took over the premises from Donie’s Takeaway, less than a year ago.

Chipmongers is a chain with outlets in Northern Ireland, Dublin, Cahir, Enniscorthy and Cork.

The Chipmongers sign has been covered up and a hand-written sign on the door said: “Chipmongers Portlaoise would regretfully like to inform all our valued customers that we are no longer open for business.

”We would like to thank all our customers for their support.”
