Traffic being diverted in Portlaoise as ANOTHER lorry crashes into railway bridge

It must be the most crashed-into bridge in the county – if not further afield.

Traffic is being diverted in Portlaoise this Thursday lunchtime following an accident which saw an articulated lorry get stuck under a railway bridge in the town.

A lorry hit the bridge on the Mountrath Road into Portlaoise at about noon today.

The road is currently closed with efforts being made to release the vehicle.

This bridge has been hit numerous times before in similar incidents.

Gardai are at the scene and it’s understood there are no injuries.

AA Roadwatch say: “Mountrath Rd in Portlaoise is closed due to a truck hitting the railway bridge.

“Emergency services are on scene and traffic is being diverted via the Old Knockmany Rd.

“Irish Rail services through Portlaoise are affected as a result.”

Irish Rail say: “There will be a delay in trains going through Portlaoise due to a bridge strike on the Mountrath Road.”
