Laois lads to the fore as IT Carlow make winning Fitzgibbon Cup start

Fitzgibbon Cup

Just like the Sigerson Cup, the Fitzgibbon Cup got underway this afternoon with colleges from all around the country in action.

Unlike the football, the hurling is played on a group basis rather than straight knock-out so the teams that lost today are still in the hunt for a quarter final place.

IT Carlow once again have the highest Laois representation and they got off to a winning start against UCD.

DJ Carey’s side, who have Enda Rowland, Shane Phelan, Sean Downey, Stephen Bergin, Eoin Gaughan and Podge Delaney in their ranks, won 3-20 to 2-16.

All bar Phelan started and keeper Rowland contributed five points from frees.

They face GMIT in their final group game and if they win that next Sunday, they will qualify as group winners for the quarter final.

Elsewhere, Maynooth, who have The Harps Daniel Comerford, were one point winners over Portlaoise native Eoin O’Connor’s Trnity College.

While the other game with Laois involvement saw LIT, who have Rathdowney-Errill’s Eric Killeen on their panel, lose out to WIT.
