Three sides with Laois involvement reach Sigerson Cup quarter finals

Sigerson Cup

The Sigerson Cup got underway this afternoon with six colleges who have Laois players in their ranks thrust into action.

And three of them remain standing after today’s games which took place all over the country.

The biggest shock of them all came down in Tralee where IT Carlow, managed by Portlaoise’s Pat Critchley, toppled their hosts by a solitary point.

IT Tralee had All-Star David Clifford in their ranks but IT Carlow had Laois lads Trevor Collins, Evan Lowry and Richie Hitchcock and they won 3-9 to 1-13.

Park-Ratheniska’s Hitchcock was corner back, Graiguecullen’s Collins was centre back while Killeshin’s Lowry contributed a point from corner forward in a memorable win which sees them face UCC next.

2018 champions UCD have Darragh Connolly and Gary Walsh on their panel and the Ballylinan man started as they faced Ulster University today.

And after a tense battle, UCD came out on top by two points. They will now faced defeated 2019 finalists St Mary’s in the quarter final.

The Belfast college advanced after seeing off Maynooth, who have St Joseph’s James Kelly and Stradbally’s Liam Knowles on their panel, 2-14 to 0-9.

There was Laois involvement on both sides as DCU faced Garda College in the seventh of the Round 1 clashes and this proved to be a real humdinger.

Shane Nerney, who started full back, Shane Murphy, Nigel Murphy and Luke Doyle were all with Garda College who found themselves level with a couple of minutes to play.

But DCU, who had O’Dempsey’s Mark Barry at wing forward, got the last two points to win.

One game took place yesterday and it saw TUD, who have Danny Luttrell and Shane Bolger on their panel, lose out to Queens.
