Champions Sarsfields off to winning start as they prove too strong for Timahoe

Laois Ladies SFC champions Sarsfields got their quest for an eighth title in a row off to a good start this afternoon when tehy proved too strong for Timahoe in what was a repeat of last year’s final.

Timahoe got off to a superb start as they fired over three points in the first two minutes. Mo Nerney scored one from play and one from a free before Jenny Murphy intercepted an opposing kick-out to split the posts.

Sarsfields responded with a goal to level the the game early. Claire Conlon fired the ball into the back of the net. Nerney and Lorna O’Sullivan then traded points as both sides began to settle into the game.

Sarsfields began to take the initiative as they fired in 2-1 in quick succession. Conlon raised a white flag before Joyce Dunne got in for two goals. Timahoe responded with a point from Nerney and Maggie Murphy.

Alice Dunne was defending superbly for Timahoe as she denied two clear goal scoring opportunities. Conlon fired over another free with Leah Tarpey opening her account with two points from play.

Nerney pointed another free with Orla Hennessy also splitting the posts. Mags McEvoy got in for goal just before half-time as Sarsfields went into the break in total control.

Conlon came out firing in the second half as she pointed 2 frees and a point from play. Nerney kept Timahoe ticking as she pointed from play.

Sarsfields went on a scoring spree as O’Sullivan and Grainne Lawlor pointed before McEvoy got her second goal of the game. Laura Marie Maher then fired over four points with Tarpey getting her third of the game.

The game finished with Joyce Dunne notching two goals and both Laura Marie Maher and O’Sullivan raising white flags.
