Clonaslee St Manman’s have opened their account in this year’s Premier Intermediate Championship with a comfortable victory over Mountrath. Clonaslee were rampant in the second half and ran out 12-point winners in the end.

Clonaslee started as they meant to go on as they were three points up in no time. DJ Callaghan pointing two frees and a 65’. Gearoid Williams got Mountrath off the mark with a point from a free.

The first half was evenly matched with both sides trading scores on many occasions. Glenn McEvoy got the game’s first score from play with Dylan Russell also raising a white flag for Mountrath in response to McEvoy’s point.

Patrick Hyland and John Rowney nudged Clonaslee further ahead as they both pointed well. Mountrath came firing back as they reeled off four scores with Rowney pointing a free for Clonaslee in the middle of the Mountrath scores. Brandon Russell firing over three frees with his younger brother Dylan Russell pointing from play.

Clonaslee went on a scoring spree of themselves as they fired over another three points in succession. Paddy Hyland with a free and a point from play as well as full-back Will Young scoring a sublime point from his own 65-yard line.

Brandon Russell slotted over another free to take the game to half-time as Clonaslee went into the break ahead by two points.

Clonaslee built momentum early in the second half as they restricted Mountrath to just three points in the half. Rowney and Liam Senior both raised white flags with two frees before the game’s crucial score landed.

Laois senior footballer Niall Corbet broke the defensive lines with a superb run before driving the ball low into the net as the game looked to have gotten away from Mountrath.

Rowney pointed another two points, one from a free, with Robert Downey and Corbet slotting over from play. Mountrath were then awarded a penalty but Brandon Russell was unable to get the better of Conor Gorman in the Clonaslee net.

Mountrath finally got a point in the second half as Cormac O’Keefe pointed in the 56th minute. Brandon Russell also scored as the game began to fizzle out.

Clonaslee would score another four points before the end as Senior, Diarmuid Conroy, Hyland and Corbet all pointed over the black spot. Paddy Williams fired over another point before the end as Clonaslee ran out 12 point winners in the end.
