Laois golf club closes due to Coronavirus case

A Laois golf club has ceased all activity with immediate effect after one of its members tested positive for Coronavirus.

Members of Abbeyleix Golf Club were informed of club closing via text message at the weekend.

A spokesperson for the club said that they “are following all of the procedures as set out by the HSE and the Golfing Union of Ireland”. The club are hoping to re-open this Wednesday, and aren’t closed for two weeks as was initially reported.

All golf clubs in Laois are operating under restrictions at present following a statement from the Golf Union of Ireland last week.

After the government placed Laois, Offaly and Kildare in a localised lockdown on Friday August 7, the golfing body responded with a list of restrictions that will be in place until midnight, Sunday August 23.

These included that golfers within the three counties can only play in their own county, club bars and restaurants had to close and could only offer outdoor dining or takeaway services and clubhouses must close except for toilet faculties.

While some Laois golf clubs have also restricted golf to just their own members with visitors and guests not allowed.

Laois, like Kildare and Offaly, were placed into lockdown on Friday August 7 following a spike in Coronavirus infections at the start of the month.

While Laois has seen a decline in the week since, our incidence rate of the virus is still higher than the national average.

Ireland’s 14-day average of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people has jumped to 22.1. Laois though is on 77.92.
