Laois Ladies SFC Playoff

St Brigids secured the last remaining place in the Laois Ladies SFC semi finals after their playoff win against Timahoe this evening in Courtwood.

Due to walkovers given by other teams, score difference could not be used to separate the sides. A fast and crazy game of football would instead.

St Brigid’s had a gale force wind at their backs in the first half but Timahoe started the better side. Mo Nerney opened the scoring after a long period of possession.

A few minutes later and St Brigid’s began to get a foothold in the game. Powerful running from midfield for them resulted in three scores for Ciara Moore. Aisling Lacey also pointed to stretch St Brigids’ lead further.

Timahoe managed to break out of defence just after the water break. A fine team move led to Aisling Byrne pulling off an incredible save for St Brigid’s.

St Brigids’ dominance was not showing on the scoreboard but the last score of the half would change that.Aisling Lacey and Anna Moore linked up to put Aoife Gallagher through on goal. She finished calmly to leave the scores 1-6 to 0-3 in St Brigids’ favour.

Timahoe came out all guns blazing from the throw in. Nerney pointed after just 15 seconds. A minute later and Maggie Murphy rounded her marker, drew the keeper and passed to Hennessy who smashed the ball into the net.

Soon after Hennessy got in again but blasted wide. Nerney then won the next kick out and finished low into the corner. In a flash Timahoe led by a point.

Ciara Moore calmed her side with another free a short while later. Hennessy and Lacey then traded points. Aoife Gallagher pointed after 39 minutes to add to her tally.

It was from here on where all the drama unfolded. Timahoe received a 10 minute sin bin but they responded well with two points from Mags Murphy and Nerney.

An off the ball incident then led to Brigids’ Áine Lacey being sent off and Mags Murphy being yellow carded and sin binned. This was, however, changed a minute later to a red.

Brigid’s used the extra woman well as Moore and Aoife Gallagher pointed in quick succession.

Moore finished low to the corner to put Brigid’s up by four. Aisling Lacey then ran in two goals either side of another Timahoe yellow card. Timahoe finished strong with two fine scores from Hennessy and Nerney six minutes into injury time.

St Brigids received a yellow card of their own in the 69th minute but they held on for a dramatic win in an unique playoff game.

St Brigids now go forward to play Portlaoise in the semi-final next weekend while champions Sarsfields play St Conleth’s in the other semi-final.
