The Heath Golf Club held their Charity Day for 2020 at the end of September.

Due to COVID lockdowns, the usual two charity events, for the Cuisle Centre and for the Alzheimer’s Society, that would normally be held on two separate occasions had to be run on one day and later in the year than normal.

Combined with a raffle on the day, a total of €6,684 was raised and this was divided equally with both charities.

Shaws Department Stores kindly sponsored the prizes. While prizes for the raffle were donated by Unichem, Heart ER Ambulance, Mark O’Boyle Golf Ltd, Deirdre’s Bistro, Cloneyhurke Crafts, Quinns of Baltinglass, Laois pharmacy and many members of the club.

The event was a four person open team competition with two scores to count on each hole with prizes for the best overall team, best men’s and best ladies’ teams.

Prize winners were as follows;

Best Men’s Team: Richie Baker, Dessie Baker, Anthony O’Reilly (visitor) Eddie McAuliffe 94pts.
Best Mixed Team: Helen Bergin Jack Bergin John Bergin Dermot Carolan 89pts.
Best Ladies Team: Mary Killeen Mary M Delaney Carmel Kelly Norma Buckley 82pts

The day did offer some excitement as Pat Tynan got a hole in one on the 17th hole, after Jim Fingleton had got a hole in one on the 11th hole on Tuesday the same week.

Both were presented with watches sponsored by Gerry Browne Jewellers.

The Heath ladies have a tradition of giving gifts to the Lady Captain and Lady President on her competition day as a token of appreciation for the work that is involved in both roles.

This year President Ger Nolan and Captain Helen Kelly asked the ladies to donate to a charity in lieu of giving gifts.

A total of €1,800 was raised and the cheque was donated to the Portlaoise Daffodil Committee for the Cancer Association.

The presentation of cheques had to be arranged at a time and place to ensure social distancing.

Cheques for the Alzheimer’s Society and Portlaoise Daffodil committee were presented by Captain Helen Kelly and President Ger Nolan on Thursday November 5 outside the closed clubhouse and the cheque for the Cuisle Centre was presented by Club Captain John Conroy and President Dermot Carolan on Tuesday November 10 outside the centre.
